Reading for VOCABULARY, following a systematic approach to vocabulary development, is made up of 20 units, each of which includes a text selected from basic fields of science and technology. Each unit is basically of nine sections. Keywords: Each single unit starts with the presentation of vocabulary items in sentences, allowing the learner to sharpen hisher guessing skills by examining the examples in real contexts. Definitions: What follows is to match the words examined with their definitions, so that the learner can be quite sure of what the words mean. Practice: Next, the learner is invited to a controlledpractice fillin task so as to start to use the words studied. Scan: Then comes the questions for scanning to find certain piece of information in the text. TrueFalse & Sentence Completion: After reading the text, the learner is expected to answer smooth TrueFalse and Sentence Completion type of exercises. Up to this point, the rationale is to form a sound contextual ground for the learner to internalize the vocabulary items studied earlier. Synonyms: Now it is the time for synonyms of the vocabulary items studied up here for the expansion of vocabulary. Collocations: The following section focuses on the pragmatic aspect, presenting the collocations of some of the words studied in the unit. Further Reading: Before the multiplechoice items, the learner is encouraged to visit certain websites for further reading by means of which heshe will have the opportunity to meet the words in similar contexts.
