Çifte Dilli Bir Bakış

Gelenek. Burda size sunulan konuların çoğu gelenek, evrim geçirmiş olsa bile bu gelenekler.

Bu tip kılavuz yazılarında yazar çoğunlukla arka, çok arka planda kalır. Ben öyle yapmayı düşündüm. Belki korkak olduğum için gizlenmek istedim. Belki çok kısa süre içinde hazırladığım bu yapıtın yetersiz olduğunu düşünerek. Gene de amacın geçerli olduğu inancında, süreç ve sayfa sayısını arttırmanın yararı olmayacağı bilincinde yola çıkıyorum.

Aslında bu minik eser (!) sizlere seslenme olanağı verdiği için anlam taşıyor. Bir de yaptığım yorumların ve yapabileceğim yanlışların yükümlülüğü var. Olumlu veya olumsuz eleştirinizi kime yönelteceksiniz? Artı, yeni bir yöntem denemekteyim, içinde bulunduğum Bilkent Üniversitesi ortamına ve iki dilde yaşadığım hayata paralel. Düz çeviri kullanmamaya özen gösterdim: Türkçe' güzelliğini hissedip işvesinden, cilvesinden, nüktesinden yararlanarak bir söyleşi; havası içinde bazı derin konulan ön plana sürdüm.

A presentation that sticks to the conventions of objective delivery of information wears an armor. This choppy essay has little by way of armor, perhaps some lame excuses.

I enjoyed working on it, intensively. (Worked intensively? Enjoyed intensively?) I do not think about explanation of method as a substitute for applied work. I certainly cannot provide anywhere near the detailed information found in numerous manuals of writing and style. There are also sources available on the internet, plus style sheets of different academic periodicals and presses. Why, then, have I spent time on this project?

Look at this endeavor as a way of discussing the relationship between method and purpose. What is the basis of our expectation of consistency in style, lettering, wording, and ordering of information? Perhaps we need to raise the question-develop awareness--before we reiterate commitment to existing practice.

Options exist, and searching for new answers may lead to creative solutions. We may come to appreciate what convention has to offer and still search for alternatives. We are in a hurry to go somewhere, but where are we going?
